In close partnership with Redmellon Development, KUA oversaw the renovation and management of seventy historic single and two-family dwellings in the Central City, Seventh Ward, and Treme neighborhoods of New Orleans. This complex project required creative architectural problem-solving and careful adherence to building and energy codes, financial incentive program requirements, and sustainability initiatives.
The renovation resulted in over one hundred affordable units compliant with local, state, and federal historic renovation requirements, Louisiana affordable housing tax-credit requirements, and sustainability requirements from Enterprise Green Communities. Innovative construction methods approved by the National Park Services (NPS) were used in order to create energy efficient structures while still preserving historic components of the original houses and are now used as case study precedents by NPS at a national level. The renovation of all 129 units was completed in less than five years and has been recognized with awards from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Rudy Bruner Foundation, the Congress for the New Urbanism, and Southface.
