When a longtime friend and client asked us for some help on a family home renovation, we were eager to help. Located along Ponce de Leon Avenue just outside of downtown Decatur, the two-story brick cottage built in 1950 had been in the family for years. With the addition of a few new family members, the client looked to renovate the existing house, add a small carriage house in the back for extended family, and lay out a new hardscaped patio and fire pit for entertaining. The new interior layout of the existing house was designed to open up the rooms and simplify movement from one space to another. The rear carriage house features floor-to-ceiling built-in bookshelves, a full kitchen, and a master suite. The exterior is wrapped on two sides by a deep arcade with classical lines and floor-to-ceiling doors that invite the party to spill out into a shared patio, blurring the lines between indoors and out.
